Fewer, well-chosen KPIs beat tracking everything
It's tempting to track dozens of metrics, but a small, focused set you actually review regularly is far more useful than an exhaustive dashboard you check once and forget.
The core KPIs worth tracking for most beauty businesses
- Revenue (and trend over time)
- Profit margin (see the Profit Margin Calculator)
- Client retention rate (see the Client Retention Calculator)
- Rebooking rate (see the Rebooking Rate Calculator)
- No-show rate (see the No-Show Rate Calculator)
- Average ticket (see our Average Ticket guide)
- New client count vs. returning client count each month
Use our KPI Tracker to record these consistently over time — the trend over months matters more than any single month's snapshot.
Review on a consistent schedule
Set a specific, recurring time (weekly or monthly) to review these numbers — a KPI you never actually look at provides no value regardless of how well you're tracking it.
Add KPIs specific to your business model
Depending on your business, additional KPIs may be worth tracking — staff utilization/capacity for a multi-provider business, retail attachment rate if retail is a meaningful part of your revenue, or membership retention if you run a membership program.
Don't let KPI tracking become a substitute for actually acting on what the numbers tell you. A declining retention rate you've tracked for six months without addressing isn't providing value — the point of tracking is to prompt action.
Frequently asked questions
How many KPIs should I track? Enough to give you a genuine picture of business health without becoming a burden to maintain — for most small beauty businesses, 5-8 consistently tracked numbers is more useful than 20 tracked sporadically.
Should every staff member see these numbers? Sharing relevant KPIs (their own rebooking rate, for example) with staff can be motivating and useful — consider what's appropriate to share broadly versus what's better kept at the ownership/management level.
