Business Credit Basics

Why separating business and personal credit matters, and how to start building it.

Why business credit matters, separate from your personal credit

Building a credit history for your business, distinct from your personal credit, can eventually let your business qualify for financing based on its own track record rather than solely your personal creditworthiness — and helps keep personal and business finances appropriately separate.

Starting to build business credit

  • Form a proper business entity (see our Business Structure guide) and get an EIN.
  • Open dedicated business bank accounts and credit accounts.
  • Establish trade credit with suppliers who report payment history, where available.
  • Make payments consistently and on time — payment history is a major factor in most credit scoring.

Even small, consistently-paid business credit accounts (a business credit card used for regular expenses and paid in full) help build a track record over time — you don't need large financing to start building business credit.

Business credit takes time to build

Similar to personal credit, business credit history builds over time — a new business generally can't expect an extensive credit history immediately, and early financing decisions may still rely partly on the owner's personal credit and guarantee.

This is general education, not financial advice. Confirm current best practices for your specific situation with a financial advisor or accountant, particularly around personal guarantees on business credit, which carry real personal financial risk.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need to personally guarantee business credit as a new business? Often yes, especially early on — many lenders require a personal guarantee until a business has established its own sufficient credit history and track record.

How long does it take to build meaningful business credit? This varies, but it's generally a multi-year process, similar to personal credit — start early and stay consistent rather than expecting quick results.
