How Reviews Affect Customer Decisions

Why review count, recency, and specificity all matter more than a perfect star rating.

A perfect rating isn't always the most persuasive one

Prospective clients often trust a business with a strong rating and a reasonable number of reviews (including a few less-than-perfect ones handled well) more than one with an unusually flawless record and very few reviews — a perfect small sample can read as less credible than a robust, mostly-positive one.

Recency matters as much as volume

A large batch of reviews from years ago, with nothing recent, can raise more questions than reassurance — recent reviews signal the business is currently operating well, not just that it once was.

Specific reviews do more work than generic ones

A review that mentions a specific service, staff member, or detail ("Jasmine did an amazing balayage and explained the maintenance perfectly") is more persuasive to a prospective client than a generic "Great service!" — it reads as more genuine and gives readers something concrete to relate to.

When asking for reviews, you can gently encourage specificity ("mention what service you had and how it turned out!") without scripting what someone should say — genuine, specific reviews naturally perform better.

How you respond matters too

Prospective clients read your responses, not just the reviews themselves — a thoughtful response to a negative review can reassure a reader more than the negative review itself concerns them. See our One-Star Review Response guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4.7 rating with 200 reviews better than a 5.0 with 10 reviews? Often yes, from a prospective client's perspective — a larger volume of mostly-positive reviews generally reads as more trustworthy and established than a small, perfect sample.

Do negative reviews always hurt? Not necessarily, if they're rare relative to your overall volume and handled professionally — how you respond to the occasional negative review can actually build trust with readers evaluating how you handle problems.
