Why segmentation improves results
A single message sent to your entire list is inherently less relevant to any individual recipient than a message tailored to a meaningful group within it. Even basic segmentation improves engagement.
Simple, practical segments to start with
- New vs. established clients — a new client welcome message doesn't fit a 5-year regular, and vice versa.
- By service type — a color-service promotion isn't relevant to a massage-only client.
- By recency — active clients vs. lapsed clients need very different messaging (see our Client Win-Back Marketing Guide for the lapsed segment specifically).
- By spend level, if relevant to your business — your highest-value clients may warrant different treatment than occasional visitors.
Start with just one or two segments (new vs. established is often the easiest and most impactful) rather than trying to build an elaborate segmentation system immediately.
Most modern software supports this natively
Many booking and marketing platforms can segment automatically based on booking history, service type, and visit recency — check your existing software's capabilities before assuming you need to track this manually.
Frequently asked questions
Is segmentation worth the effort for a small business? Even basic segmentation (new vs. established clients) is usually worth the modest effort — it's one of the more accessible ways to meaningfully improve marketing relevance.
How often should I update my segments? This depends on how your software handles it — many platforms update segments automatically based on ongoing client activity, requiring little manual maintenance once set up.
