Georgia Barber License Guide

Hour requirements for Barber II and Master Barber licenses, and how the apprenticeship path works.

This information is provided for general educational purposes and does not constitute legal advice. Licensing and regulatory requirements may change. Always verify current requirements with the appropriate government agency or qualified professional.

Barbers are licensed separately from cosmetologists

Even though both fall under the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers, barbering and cosmetology are distinct license types in Georgia — a cosmetology license does not automatically qualify someone to work as a barber, and vice versa.

Hour requirements

As published by the board:

  • Barber II Apprentice — approximately 2,280 hours, minimum 14 months.
  • Master Barber — approximately 1,500 school hours or 3,000 apprenticeship hours, minimum 18 months.

Confirm current hour requirements directly with the board before enrolling in a program — this guide reflects information verified at the time of writing, and requirements can change.

The theory exam requirement for apprentices

Georgia rules have required apprentices licensed after a certain date to take the theory portion of the state board exam within their first 12 months of being licensed as an apprentice, rather than waiting until the end of their full apprenticeship. Confirm whether this applies to your specific timeline with the board.

Applying and renewing

Applications go through the state's GOALS online licensing portal.

Opening your own shop

If you're planning to open rather than work for an existing shop, see our How to Start a Barbershop in Georgia guide — your shop will need its own separate license in addition to your individual barber license.

If your shop will also offer cosmetology services (color, chemical treatments) alongside barbering, make sure each staff member holds the correct license type for the services they'll actually perform — barber and cosmetology licenses aren't interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hold both a barber license and a cosmetology license? Yes, some professionals pursue both to offer a broader service range, though it means separately meeting each license's requirements.

Does a barber license expire the same way a cosmetology license does? Both are subject to Georgia's renewal and continuing education requirements, though specific timelines can differ by license type — confirm your renewal date and requirements directly with the board.
