Licensing: individual and shop, same as salons
Barbers are licensed separately from cosmetologists in Georgia, through the same Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers. Every barber working in the shop needs an individual license, and the shop itself needs its own shop license — see our Georgia Barber License Guide for hour requirements and how the apprenticeship path works.
A barber license and a cosmetology license are not interchangeable in Georgia. If your shop offers both barbering and broader cosmetology services (color, chemical treatments), confirm which license each staff member actually needs for the services they perform.
Chair rental is the dominant model in barbering
More than most beauty business types, barbershops commonly run on a chair rental model — barbers pay a flat rental fee and keep their own service revenue. This is simpler to manage than commission but means less control over pricing and consistency. See our Booth Rental vs. Commission overview for the tradeoffs before deciding your shop's model.
Register your business
Register your shop, typically as an LLC, through the Georgia Secretary of State — see our Georgia Business Registration Guide.
Budgeting for your first year
Barbershop buildouts (chairs, mirrors, waiting area) are often more moderate than a full salon or med spa, but don't underestimate a cash cushion for the first few months while you build a client base — especially if you're relying on walk-ins rather than an existing following.
If you're bringing an existing client base with you from another shop, your ramp-up period is usually much shorter than for a brand-new barber. Factor your own situation into how much cash cushion you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
Can barbers and cosmetologists work in the same shop? Yes, as long as each holds the correct license for the services they perform, and the shop itself is properly licensed.
Do I need a special license to offer hot towel shaves or beard treatments? These are generally within a barber's standard scope, but confirm specifics with the board if you're offering anything beyond typical barbering services.
